The Threshold
The Just Power Alliance (JPA) stood at a threshold of leadership evolution. While the coalition was proficient in tactical resistance, a new era of regional policy work required a shift in orientation. The friction was a "Capacity Ceiling"—their existing strategic tools were built for immediate advocacy, leaving them without the long-horizon literacy needed to steward a complex, justice-centered energy transition.
The Approach
We designed a process to move from complexity to strategic clarity using Futures Thinking as the primary medium. By introducing VUCA framing, we invited the leadership team to drop the need for prediction and instead embrace a stance of adaptive capacity. This approach allowed the coalition to treat uncertainty not as a barrier, but as the terrain on which their future work would be built.
The Craft
To ground these insights into social infrastructure, the group built a Strategic Foresight Framework using the Futures Triangle. We facilitated a mapping of the "pushes" of the present and the "pulls" of the future, allowing the team to identify specific strategic tensions. This wasn't a passive lecture; it was a collective sensemaking session where the team forged a shared language for navigating political and systemic ambiguity.
The Inheritance
JPA moved from "Tactical Resistance to Collective Vision," inheriting a shared framework for long-horizon leadership. By constructing this foresight infrastructure themselves, they gained the "futures literacy" necessary to prepare for disruptions rather than merely reacting to them. They left the lab with a bold, justice-centered path forward and a strengthened capacity for coalition-wide trust.
The Signal
A realization that Foresight is an Equity Tool—the understanding that the power to define the future is a prerequisite for dismantling the weights of the past.
